Fixing a Broken Window Lock
Here are four of the most common problems with broken window locks. Review the four problems below to determine which one you are experiencing. If any of these instructions do not fix the problem you are having, please contact us for further assistance.
 Problem 1 - unable to lock the window:
First, unlock the window completely. Now, carefully push the upper sash upward, as far as you can and pull the lower sash to the bottom of the window. Once both sashes are in their proper positions, you should be able to engage the lock.
Problem 2 - the top sash has dropped from its pocket: It is sometimes helpful to have another person assist with this fix. Have one person push the upper sash all the way to the top while the other person at the same time pushes the lower sash down. This should allow the sashes to align and then you should be able to engage the window lock.
Problem 3 - the sashes are not aligned correctly in the channel: Tilt each sash in like you would if you were cleaning the windows. Then, push both sashes back into the window channel firmly. Your sash should now be aligned and the window should lock correctly.
Problem 4 - balance shoe is disengaged:
Sometimes the balance shoe becomes disengaged from the sash, and the result is the window will not lock because it is misaligned. To correct this situation, please refer to the section on "Windows Dropping Down.
