Fixing Dropping Windows
If you have just recently tilted the sashes in to clean them and you're having issues with them closing and locking properly then you may have knocked the sash out of its balance. This is a simple fix and can be done with a flat head screwdriver.
Step 1: Start by tilting in the sash, like you did when you were cleaning it. Have the sash parallel to the floor and gently pull up on the bottom of the sash. This should release the bottom part of the window and allow you to remove the sash completely. Once the sash is removed, place it on the floor. This will give you enough room to work on the sash balances.
Step 2: Take your flat head screwdriver, and carefully insert it into the metal part of the balance which has a "U" shaped groove in it. (Figure #1) Note that the upright "U" is the locked position.
Step 3: With tension, carefully turn the screwdriver towards you until the "U" turns into a "C" shape. This is now the unlocked position. Please be aware that the balance is spring-loaded, and you want to be careful to hold it so that it doesn't go all the way up.
Step 4: Now carefully bring the balance up 3 to 4 inches and slowly twist the screwdriver back toward the screen to bring the groove back to the "U" or locked position. (Figure #2) Once you have done this, you can now remove the screwdriver that was holding the balance.
Step 5: Now take the sash, that you set to the side, and with it once again parallel to the floor, place it into the balance. (please note that at the bottom of the sash are two balance tabs or "pivot tabs". These are what will fit into the "U" shape of the balance.)
Step 6: Firmly but carefully press on the bottom of the window until the balance tabs are securely in the "U" of the balance.
Step 7: Tilt the sash back up into the closed position and lock it into the frame. You will hear a click to insure it has been properly reinstalled.
Step 8: At this point the sash should be operating as normal and your window should be functioning properly.
Step 9: Please note that when tilting in your sashes for cleaning proposes, to always have the sash at an angle to the frame. Sea-Thru Windows does not recommend removing the sash unless it is absolutely necessary.
